Eats_SideEver since launching The Good Ones, a Boston-based pop-up event and entrepreneurial networking outfit, in June 2012, co-founders Carolyn Meenan and Jennifer Brooke have been a rising new team of social and charity connectors for hip foodies and their party-loving cohorts.

To date, they’ve held several themed parties at Jody Adams-helmed venues like Rialto and Trade, thrown posh tete-a-tetes featuring a wide variety of carefully selected intellectuals and creatives for networking purposes (their most recent was Greek themed, and had people in togas partying at a private rooftop in the Seaport), and this Sunday they will host “Eat Play Love”, the finale to their Top Secret Top Chef battles that began in February at a private loft in the Leather District. The showdown is between reigning champion Brendan Burke, sous chef for Bastille Kitchen (see also: our Drinks column this week), and challenger Ben Harwood, sous chef at Tico. In short: It’s a brunch battle showcasing young, local sous chefs who will be the next culinary stars in town.

For the final event in the series, held at Michael Schlow’s Tico in the Back Bay (Tico’s Greg Neises will be manning the cash-bar doing specialty tequila, maple-water, and elderflower cocktails), guests will have two three-course Italian-inspired meals served simultaneously, Top Chef style. Meaning, the day of the event the chefs will be given a budget to procure the ingredients of their choosing to fit the Renaissance-meets-hip-hop theme.

“It’s their magic,” Meenan says, “We just gave them general details to work with.”

As everyone mingles and dances, each chef will work with his team to produce inventive dishes with one winner being proclaimed king. All of which will play out as revelers dance to live remixes of classical music fused with old-school hip-hop.

“We have a lot of interesting, smart people coming together over food, and that’s really what it’s about,” Meenan says. “Building community while breaking down the traditional silos [and social interaction] people are used to being a part of in Boston.”

Besides connecting like-minded people, for Meenan and Brooke, going local is a big part of their mission. For this event they’ve partnered with Peabody-based cheese gods Mozzarella House and Organic Living Superfoods, a natural foods vendor (which will be supplying healthy small bites and snacks) owned by a former partner at the beloved but now-closed vegan Prana Cafe. Additionally, the event will raise awareness for nonprofits like Gloucester-based Cape Ann Fresh Catch, the largest community supported fishery in the US.

Tico is normally closed on Sundays, so the party will take over the whole spot, as well as the private outdoor patio space.

Killer food. Hip-hop. Tequila. Supporting local.

Sunday Funday indeed.
